Timing on Race Day
Once you've defined checkpoints, races, segments, imported participants, and assigned timing devices to the appropriate checkpoints (start, finish, or intermediates). Once all this is configured, your race is ready for timing.
This article will guide you through race day operations, focusing on two main methods to start the timing in RRM: knowing the exact start time in advance, or having visual confirmation at the start.
For each method, the following applies:
Activate Device Reading: Activate the reading process in the corresponding devices.
Activate Device Process Passings: Ensure the devices assigned to checkpoints are set to process passings.
Activate Checkpoint Process Passings: Make sure the checkpoints assigned are activated for passings.
Activate Race Process Passings: Turn on the processing of passings for the race itself.
You can activate everything except the race process passings, leaving that activation for the final moment before the start.
All passings recorded while a checkpoint, race or device is not actively processing passings are disregarded with statuses CHECKPOINT_CLOSED, RACE_CLOSED or DEVICE_CLOSED. You can see these passings in the Event Control view.
Option 1: Starting with a Pre-Defined Start Time
If you know the exact start time of each race beforehand, use the following steps:
Enter the start time and date in the Race Dashboard.
Activate the "Process Passings" option in the race.
If the start time is in the future, the clock will display a countdown. Any passings recorded during this countdown period are disregarded with status TIME_INVALID. Once the clock starts counting up, the timing officially begins, and passings are processed as they occur. You can monitor the live classifications in real time through multiple methods (see Monitoring Live Timing Data).
Option 2: Visual Confirmation at Start
If you do not know the exact start time beforehand, but have visuals at the start line, follow these steps:
Set the start time at the beginning of the day. Leave the hour, minute, and second fields as 0:0:0.
Keep the race's "Process Passings" option disabled.
When the race starts, enable the "Process Passings" option in the race and take note of the actual start time.
This approach allows the race time of each passing to match the current time of day when processed. Once you've noted the actual start time, enter it in the Race Dashboard. You can monitor the live classifications in real time through multiple methods (see Monitoring Live Timing Data).
RRM saves all passings as they are received and recalculates rankings on demand, ensuring no adverse effects from adjusting the start time—rankings are always consistent and based on precise data.
Final Checklist for Race Day Timing
Ensure all checkpoints, devices, and race configurations are activated appropriately.
Follow either method 1 or method 2 depending on your scenario.
Keep devices reading and processing passings as per race requirements.
With these guidelines, you're ready to execute efficient and accurate race timing using RRM.
These are just a few methods to operate during race day. Depending on each timer's experience and race needs, you may find other approaches that work best for you.
